Course Outline










I.   Introduction to History (January)

     Topic : Students will discuss the nature of history and its significance in fostering an understanding of our contemporary world.  Students will establish their class as a social organization.
     

II.  Current Affairs (whole semester; daily discussion,)

      Topic:  Students will discuss current events which arise and analyze the  significance of  those events as they pertain to society.

      

III.  Unit 1 - Political Decision Making (February-March : 5 weeks)

     Topic: Students will examine the problems faced by Britain and France as society  attempts to move from an absolutist political organization to one based on principles of equality and liberty.

      Major Assignments: Enlightenment Philosophers, French Revolution Editorial

      Unit Tests: British Revolutions; Enlightenment and American Revolution,  French  Revolutions

 
IV.  Unit 2 - Economic Decision Making (March-April: 3 weeks)

      Topic: Students will study the development of economic infrastructures that made the
industrial revolution possible.  The unit examines how British  society evolved in the eighteenth  and nineteenth centuries as it went through the industrialization process.    

       Unit Test: Industrial Revolution, Economic Reforms

 
V.  Unit 3 - Ideology and the Decision Making Process (April-May: 4 weeks)

Topic: Students will identity the ideological struggles between and among the
social classes as industrializing societies attempt to reconcile competing interests.  Students will examine the major political ideologies (liberalism, (conservatism, socialism and nationalism)  that were developed in the nineteenth century in an attempt to accommodate different viewpoints.

 Major Assignments:  Form a political party and create a political platform.

  Unit Test: Ideology, Forces of Nationalism 

 
VI.  Unit 4 - International Economic Relations (May - June:: 2 weeks)

 Topic: Students will discover that Western technological societies had a major impact on the rest of the world in the late nineteenth century.  Students will look at the various ways societies  were forced to deal with a new culture and the impact that imperialism had on the European world.

      Major Assignment: Reading Assignment; Imperialism Simulation

      Unit Test: Imperialism

 VII. Unit 5 -  International Political Relations (June: 1-2 weeks)

Topic: Students will analyze the decisions made by the nations of Europe prior to World War I   which ultimately caused the war.  Students will examine the relations between European  countries prior to World War I in order to gain some understanding of international relations.

      Major Assignment: Pre World War I International Diplomacy Simulation
